707,527. Cooling systems for transformers or like apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 18, 1952 [Jan. 12, 1952], No. 32082/52. Class 64(3) [Also in Group XXXV] A transformer 16 enclosed in a sealed casing 12 is cooled by pumping an insulating liquid from a sump 24 up pipe 30 and through a spray 32 which distributes it over the transformer 16 which is cooled by evaporation of the liquid. Above the vapour filled space 33 is a body 34 of non- condensing gas such as nitrogen, argon, neon or carbon dioxide, the surface between gas and vapour moving up from position 40 to position 38 as the loading of the transformer, and consequently the vapour temperature, increases. At a level between positions 40 and 38, a tube 42 connects the interior of casing 12 to a manifold 44 at the bottom of a condenser 26. When the vapour level reaches this tube, some vapour flows down it and up the condenser where it cools and the liquid returns to the sump 24 by way of a pipe 46, which has a U-bend forming a vapour trap. Any non-condensing gas which enters the condenser 26 returns to the casing through an upper manifold 49 and tube 48. By this arrangement the temperature and pressure inside the casing are maintained substantially constant. This may be aided by the casing including a layer of heat insulating material 18 such as glass fibre. In a modification, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), the tube 42 is replaced by a further condenser. The cooling liquid may comprise the liquid fluorinated organic compounds selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon ethers and'tertiary hydrocarbon amines in which at least half the hydrogen atoms have been substituted by at least one halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine and fluorine, and of which at least half of the halogen is fluorine. Suitable liquids are named and others are disclosed in Specifications 661,531, and 877,954.
