Abstract
707,160. Copying by means of radiant heat. DICK, CO., A. B. June 20, 1951 [July 28, 1950], No. 14620/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) [Also in Groups VIII and XVI] A method of producing a stencil from an original comprises placing the original in close face-to-face relation with a stencil blank comprising a base tissue having a heat-sensitive film of plastic material on one side which renders the blank ink-impervious, and directing radiations rich in infra-red upon the original, whereby heat is developed in the dark areas thereof, causing rupture of corresponding areas of the plastic film to provide openings through which ink can pass. The original may be arranged with its printed face against either face of the blank, the rays being directed against the blank, or with its non-printed face against the film, the rays being directed against the original. The film is most suitably 0.1-3.0 mm. thick and may be applied by adhesive or by calendering, previously being stretched. The radiant energy may be delivered from a photoflash bulb, carbon arc-lamp, infra-red-ray lamp, or. tungsten filament, with the aid of lenses or reflectors, and the exposure should be as short as possible to avoid blurring due to lateral conduction of heat. A long, thin source such as a hot wire may be used, the radiation traversing the blank at a constant speed, or a point source may be used, the blank and orginal being mounted on a rapidly rotating cylinder, and the source moving axially thereof, until each point has been exposed. The base tissue may be Yoshino paper, wood fibres, wool, silk, cotton, hemp, nylon, cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose, polyvinylidene chloride, glass fibres, mineral wool or asbestos, with or without a small amount of binder. The plastic film may be polyvinyl, polyethylene, or polystyrene resins, nylon, cellulose esters and ethers, with plasticizers added if desired to lower the softening temperature of the plastic, substantially as described in Specification 696,563.
