Abstract
706,752. Hydrodynamic couplings. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. June 11, 1952 [June 16, 1951], No. 14703/52. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXII] In a vaned element of a hydrodynamic coupling comprising an annular shell 19, curved vanes 18, and means associated with the shell and the radially inner margins of the vanes for positively positioning the vanes on the shell, a core ring 20 surrounding and contacting the radially outer margins of the vanes provides the sole means for holding the vanes in tight operative assembly with the shell. The vanes 18 have tabs 30 entered in slots in the shell. In one embodiment the vanes also have tabs 29 entered in slots in the core ring which comprises a strip of sheet metal wrapped round the vanes with the ends overlapped or butted and welded, as at 37. In another embodiment the core ring is heated, placed around the outer edges of the vanes and allowed to cool so as to contract and tightly engage the vanes. Protuberances may be formed in the core ring to prevent deflection of the outer ends of the vanes. In the embodiments described the vaned element forms the stator or reaction member mounted on a hub 21, relative rotation being prevented by serrations on the shell 19 engaging serrations on the hub and axial movement of the element being prevented by forming indentations 44 in the shell with a tool 42 to engage a groove in the hub 21.
