Class 52(5) [Also in Group X] A supporting device comprises a post 2 L-shaped in cross-section, on which is slidably mounted a gripping member 3 having a recess 8 extending therethrough complementary to but slightly larger than the post 2. When a weight is applied to the supporting portion 6 the gripping member tilts and the edges of the walls of the recess 8 bite into and grip the outer surfaces cf the post. To improve the gripping action the device may be made of hard metal coated with lead. The gripping member 3 has small apertures 17 in the walls 13, 14 adjacent the recess to receive wedges 18 to hold the gripping member in position. Similar apertures 19 may be provided in the socket portion of a base 1 to hold the post in position. As shown in Fig. 5 a pipe coil is supported by the adjustable gripping members on three posts. An additional gripping member 20 mounted in an inverted position on the post holds the pipe coil against upward movement. The post may be of W or V cross-section instead of being L-shaped. The walls of the opening 8 may extend obliquely to the surface of the gripping member.
