Abstract

A spray booth for progressively spray coating a railway coach or the like has a track supporting the booth, power means for moving the booth on the track longitudinally of the coach, means at the side of the coach for supporting spray gun operators in an enclosure, and means for exhausing spray fumes from said enclosure. The booth has vertical casings 1 and 2 and a bridging section 3. Within each vertical casing is a spray chamber 4. The common ceiling stretching across the full width of the spray booth has openings for the entry of clean replacement air from filters 38 and blowers 39. Within each chamber 4 is an operator's platform 10. The platform is raised or lowered by a <PICT:0706600/III/1> tackle block 15 joined by a cable 16 to a hoist motor fixed to the underside of the roof of the booth, and is motivated by the operator. In the rear corners of the chamber are stationary light casings 22 to illuminate the surface being sprayed. On the inner side 6 of each chamber 4 are exhaust outlets 23 and 24 through which the spray fumes are drawn to compartments 25 where the air is washed by water sprays. The air is withdrawn from the compartments 25 by fans 27 into a centrally located vertical outlet, and thence to a stationary duct 30. The stationary duct 30 has tiltable vanes on its underside, those immediately above the vertical outlet being opened by cams on the outlet so that the air enters the duct 30, and is then withdrawn through a stack 34 and a connecting duct 35 into a blower 36. The booth is propelled by an electric motor 43 driving one of its wheels. The booth travels the length of the coach being sprayed, its speed and direction being controlled from one of the spray platforms. In a modification the both is suspended from rollers riding on ceiling beams.
