Abstract

706,560. Lasting shoe uppers. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and GUDGER, J. April 24, 1952 [Feb. 1, 1951], No. 2493/51. Classes 17(1) and 17(2) A shoe upper which has been subjected at least to a preliminary tensioning over its last for example by being pulled over in conventional manner is slit at the lasting margin at a curved end portion of the shoe at a plurality of places spaced round it and an unwanted marginal portion of at least one of the layers of the upper materials is simultaneously trimmed away as the slitting progresses round the shoe end portion. A machine is provided generally similar in its construction and mode of operation to that described in Specification 680,933 having' an intermittently acting slitting knife (not shown), operated in time relation to feed rolls 1, 3 but having also a stationary but adjustable knife 5 having a cutting edge 15 formed on a curved portion 17 received in a peripheral groove 19 in the feed roll 3 to cut through the lining material without cutting into the outer layer of upper materials. The upper feed roll 1 also is recessed at 21 to provide clearance for the knife 5 when the rolles 1, 3 move together when there is no work present in the machine. The shoe is positioned in the machine relatively to the slitting knife by engaging its bottom with a plate 11 to determine the extent of the slits inward of the edge of the upper. Specifications 470,749, 623,657 and 660,036, [Group VIII], also are referred to.
