Class 120(2) [Also in Groups XVI, XXIV and XXXIV] A driving mechanism for a take-up roll for winding wire comprises a driving shaft, a driven shaft operating said take-up roll, differential. gearing connecting said shafts including a spider relatively rotatable with respect to the shafts, a fluid pressure system including a pump driven from the spider, means for throttling the flow through the system to load the pump and retard the spider, a brake to retard the spider and means responsive to the pressure in the system for releasing the brake. A winding spindle 20 is driven by a shaft 19 of a differential gear 17 driven by a shaft 16. The differential gear 17 comprises bevel pinions 38 and 34 on the shafts 19 and 16, respectively, and a spider 40 rotatable on bearings 41 and 42. The spider carries bevel pinions 45 and 46 and a spiral gear 50 engaging a spiral pinion 51 on a shaft 52. The shaft 52 drives a pump 55 which draws liquid from a reservoir 36 and forces the liquid through a pipe 58 to a throttle valve 59, a relief valve 66 being provided in a by-pass pipe 65. The liquid is also supplied to a diaphragm 81 to release' a brake 70 on the shaft 52, the brake normally being applied by spring pressure. At the commencement of a winding operation, the brake 70 is applied, such that the ring gear 50 only rotates at a slow speed, thus driving the pump 55 at slow speed, while the shaft 19 is driven at approximately the same speed as the shaft 16. As the diameter of the roll increases the brake 70 is gradually released, allowing the ring gear 50 to rotate faster, but slowing down the shaft 19. The shaft 19 may be braked by driving a second pump 85 which draws liquid from the reservoir 56 and supplies same to a throttle valve 90, the setting of which determines the tension with which the wire is wound.
