Abstract

Aliphatic mono-olefins of 3 to 8 carbon atoms are copolymerized with a mono-olefinic aromatic compound by a continuous process at temperatures between-160 DEG and 10 DEG F. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in a number of stages in one of which the ratio of monomers in the feed is greater, and in another stage the ratio is less, than is desired in the final blend. The preferred aliphatic olefin is isobutylene but propylene, n-butylene and pentenes are also specified. Styrene is the preferred aromatic compound, others specified being a - and p-methyl styrenes, a -methyl-p-methyl styrene, p - chloro - styrene, dichlorostyrene, p - ethyl styrene, indene and a -vinyl naphthalene. A diluent, such as methyl chloride, ethane, propane, butane, ethyl chloride, methylene chloride or refined naphtha, is preferably used. In a 3-stage process, an excess of styrene is added in the second stage and withheld from the first stage, or extra styrene is in effect added in the first stage by withholding isobutylene from that stage and adding the extra isobutylene in the second stage. To obtain a product containing 58 to 62 per cent. of combined styrene, using a temperature between -140 DEG and -100 DEG F. and 1 to 10 volumes of methyl chloride diluent per volume of reactants, a copolymer containing 70-80 per cent. styrene is produced in the first stage, 20-40 per cent. in the second stage and 55 to 75 per cent. in the third stage. Preferably the catalyst additions are adjusted to effect 35 to 45 per cent. conversion in the first stage, up to 70 to 80 per cent. conversion in the second and 28 to 100 per cent. in the third stage. Specified catalysts are boron fluoride, ether-BF3, aluminium chloride, titanium tetrachloride, aluminium bromide, AlCl3.Al(OC2H5)3, AlCl3.AlCl2.OH, AlBr3. AlBr2OH, AlBr2Cl.AlOCl, AlBr Cl2.AlOBr, TiCl4.AlCl2OH, TiOCl2.TiCl4, AlBr3.Br2.CS2, BF3-isopropyl alcohol, BF3-ethylene and activated BF3 in methyl chloride. The catalyst is preferably dissolved in, for example, methyl or ethyl chloride, carbon bisulphide, butane or methyl chloride-butane mixtures. Internal or external refrigerants such as ethane, propane, ethylene, methyl chloride and liquid or solid carbon dioxide, may also be used.
