Abstract

Cellulose derivatives are plasticized with diglycollic acid di-esters of phenolic etheralcohols, obtainable by direct esterification of the acid with one or more of the ether-alcohols from the reaction between (a) 1 mol. of cresol and 1 or 2 mols. of ethylene oxide or (b) 1 mol. of phenol and either 2-4 mols. of ethylene oxide or 1-2 mols. of propylene oxide or this with ethylene oxide to give a product containing together 2-4 mols. of alkylene oxide. In examples, cellulose acetate film is plasticized in solution with phenoxy ethoxy ethanol-di-glycollic ester, phenoxy triethoxy ethanol diglycollic ester, mixed cresoxyethanol diglycollic esters, and phenoxy propanol diglycollic ester in proportions of 1 of plasticizer to 2 or 4 of cellulose acetate in a mixed solvent; ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate-butyrate and cellulose nitrate films are similarly prepared; a cellulose acetate moulding is plasticized with one of the above products. Other ingredients may be included. Solvents specified include methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, ethyl acetate, acetone, cyclohexanone and ethyl lactate.ALSO:The invention comprises diglycollic acid di-esters of phenolic ether-alcohols, obtainable by direct esterification of the acid with one or a mixture of two of the ether alcohols from the reaction between 1 mol. of cresol and 1-2 mols. of ethylene oxide, or the reaction between 1 mol. of phenol and 2-4 mols. of ethylene oxide, or 1-2 mols. of propylene oxide or 1-2 mols. of the latter with sufficient ethylene oxide to give a product containing 2-4 mols. of alkylene oxide together. Other methods of converting to the esters, which may be mixed, may be used. In examples the esterification of diglycollic acid with the following ether-alcohols is described:-phenoxy ethoxy ethanol, phenoxypropanol, mixed cresoxyethanols and phenoxy tri (ethoxy) ethanol; other ether-alcohols specified in combination with diglycollic acid are cresoxy ethoxy ethanol, and phenoxy-di-(ethoxy) propanols. The products are plasticizers for cellulose derivatives.
