Abstract
706.045. Drying gases. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., SCHUFTAN, P. M., and WEBSTER, T. J. Aug. 7, 1952 [Sept. 5, 1951], No. 20992/51. Class 34(1) In gas drying apparatus in which the gas to be dried passes downwardly through a bed of adsorbent material the drier is regenerated by heating the bed under the pressure at which drying is carried out, removing the residual water by flushing with a small amount of dried gas while the heating continues and cooling the bed by passing more dried gas upwardly through it. Driers 1, 2 have electric shell heaters 3, 4 and the inlet pipe 5 for the gas to be dried leads through a Venturi nozzle 6 and vaporization cooler 7 to a water separator 8 and the inlets of driers 1, 2 controlled by valves 13, 14, the outlets being connected by.pipes 15, 16 controlled by valves 17, 18 to main outlet line 19. From the inlets of the driers pipes 20, 21 controlled by valves 22, 23 lead through pipe 24 to one phase of a heatexchanger 25 and thence through pipe 26 to a water cooler 27 and separator 28 and from the separator a pipe 31 leads through valve 32 to the throat of the Venturi nozzle 6. The other phase of the heat-exchanger 25 is connected by pipes 33, 34 controlled by valves 35, 36 to pipe 15 and by pipes 37, 38, controlled by valves 39, 40, to pipe 16. In operation with drier 1 being used and drier 2 being regenerated valves 13, 17, 23, 32 are opened while valves 14, 18, 22, 35, 36, 39, 40 are shut. Heater 4 is switched on and the adsorbent allowed to reach regeneration temperature. Steam and gas formed by the heating of the adsorbent are drawn by suction from the throat of the Venturi 6 through pipes 21, 24 and heat-exchange 25 and pipe 26 to cooler 27 where the steam is condensed thence to separator 28 where condensed water is removed and to Venturi 6 where the gas rejoins the main stream. Residual moisture is now flushed out of the drier by opening valves 39, 40 for a short period, the gas drawn through pipe 37 being heated by passage through the heat exchanger 25. After flushing is completed valves 39, 40 are closed, heater 4 is switched off and the drier is cooled by opening valve 18 to admit a stream of cold dried gas drawn by Venturi suction.
