Abstract

705,814. Copy-turning. BECKER; H. Aug. 5, 1952 [Aug. 9, 1951], No. 19715/52. Class 83 (3) A lathe for turning the grooves in Pilger and like rolls has a tool holder Teciprocable towards and away from the work in synchronism with the work rotation, the tool holder and its guides being carried by a rotatable support, and is characterized in that adjustment of the tool holder for depth of cut is effected indirectly through compensating gearing which causes displacement of the tool holder on its guides additional to that provided by: the mechanism which effects reciprocation of the tool holder and operates through at .least part of the driving elements of the said reciprocating mechanism. The work 1, Fig. 2, is rotated by the machine spindle 2 driven from an electric motor 3 through gearing 4-7. The motor also drives, through gearing 8-12, Fig. 5, a shaft 13 with a cam-disc 14 in the cam groove of which engages a roller 17 on a rack 16. The latter is reciprocated by the cam and moves a pinion 18 which rotates a shaft 19, Fig. 3, and drives, through a differential gear 20-22, a shaft 23 and 'through bevel gears 24, 25 a vertical spindle 26 carrying a pinion 27 engaging a rack 29 secured to the tool slide 28. The latter is mounted on a rotary base 35 for producing the circular motion component required to turn the roll groove and rotation of the base is effected by 'worm gearing 34 from a shaft 30, Fig. 5, and toothed gearing 31, 32. As the base 35 rotates to give' circular movement. to the tool the rack 29 for the tool slide is moved and a compensating movement of the pinion 27 is necessary to counteract this. Rota- 'tion of shaft 30 is therefore arranged, through gears 31, 37 and differential gearing 38-40, to rotate a worm 41 which turns, the casing 36, Fig. 3, of the first differential. The casing 42, Fig. 5, of the second differential may be moved during cutting by hand-rotation of a worm 43 which gives an additional movement to the toolslide and thus allows the depth of cut of the tool to be increased or decreased during working as required.
