Abstract
705,771. Buckles; buttons. MULLER, T. R. Jan. 30, 1952 [Feb. 17, 1951; May 30, 1951; Nov. 12, 1951], No. 2515/52. Class 43 In making a covered buckle or button by applying a "glued-on" fabric or other material to a frame or former made of paper-board, metal &c. at least part of the frame is coated with a quick-drying thermo-adhesive substance, the frame is covered mechanically with a fabric or other material which is cut to shape beforehand and finally caused to adhere to the frame or former by the application of heat and pressure. In an example a buckle frame or former 2, Fig. 2, is covered with a piece 1 of fabric or other material by means of a die 3 comprising two cores or upwardly projecting portions 4, 5 with detachable guide members 6, 7 mounted in cavities 8, 9 therein and serving to guide the material 1 by engaging within corresponding apertures therein, a plunger tool such as 14 being used to force the material down into the die. The material 1 is thus held between the frame 2 and an ejecting-plate 10 located at the bottom of the die and above four holes 13 provided in the base of the die. After the removal of the detachable guide members 6, 7 the die is inverted and placed upon an assembly device comprising a base plate 15, Fig. 4, provided with two pairs of upwardly projecting guide pins, such as 16, which register with the guide holes 8. 9 of the inverted die. After heating the assembly device to a temperature sufficient to soften the thermo-adhesive substance on the frame 2, the ejecting-plate 10 is forced downwardly by a device comprising a plate 11 with studs 12 arranged to project into the holes 13 in the base of the inverted die, so that plates 18, 19 supporting the die are forced downwardly against the action of compression springs 20, 21. The fabric 1, already turned down on the frame 2, as shown in Fig. 4, is thus pressed against heated projecting portions 24 of the base plate 15 and turned inwardly and secured on the frame 2. After inverting the die to its original position a backing piece 25, Fig. 5, corresponding in shape to the buckle. is coated with a thermoadhesive substance such as vinyl acetate and pressed upon the rear face of the buckle by a heated punch 26. The ejecting plate 10 is operated finally by the plate 11 to remove the covered buckle from the die 3. A method of making a reinforced buckle frame consisting of a metal frame embedded in paper board is described.
