Abstract

705,767. Pumps. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Dec. 11, 1952 [Dec. 17, 1951], No. 29517/51. Class 7(2) Two-stage supercharging of in-line engines is effected by compressors C, C<1> in series driven by exhaust turbines at least one of which is disposed adjacent each engine end and powered only by exhaust gases from cylinders lying on the adjacent side of a transverse plane through the engine. Various arrangements are shown. In Fig. 3, turbines B<1>, B<1> each receive from two adjacent cylinders of a row and two compressors C<1> feed, as through valves C<7>, an inlet manifold C<6> common to all the cylinders. The arrangement of Fig. 2 (not shown), is similar but each compressor C<1> feeds at its own cylinder row only, a duplication of the single-row arrangement of Fig. 1 (not shown). Modifications of the Fig. 3 arrangement are described in which (1) the turbo-compressor sets of one cylinder row are interchanged and each compressor C<1>, which can receive from the compressor C of (a) its own, or (b) the other, row, feeds the two adjacent cylinders of both rows with an interconnection between the inlet manifolds in case (a) if desired, and (2) the turbo-compressor sets of one cylinder row are dispensed with, each turbine receiving from the two adjacent cylinders of both rows. This last arrangement can be duplicated to give a four-row arrangement which may be modified as in Fig. 7 to give feeding of the two adjacent cylinders of each of four rows by the compressors C<1>. More than two compressor pairs C, C<1> may be used. Coolers may be provided between the compressors C and C<1> and between the compressors C<1> and the engine. The invention is applicable to engines having any even or odd plurality of cylinders in each row, and engines in which one turbine is fed by different numbers of cylinders from another. Centrifugal or centripetal compressors and single- or multi-stage turbines may be employed.
