Abstract

A cyclic process for the production of methane comprises catalytically converting a gas mixture containing substantially less than 3, e.g. 1.1-1.5 parts of H2 per 1 part CO to methane, mixing the reaction mixture thus formed with fresh synthesis gas in a volume at least equal, e.g. 2-6 times, that of the fresh gas, and feeding the combined mixture to the catalyst at about 200-300 DEG C. The fresh gas may be preheated with the unreturned reaction mixture and then mixed with the returned gas which is still at above 100 DEG C. to give a temperature of 200-300 DEG C. Heat from the entire reaction mixture may first be used for steam generation or the like. CO2 may be separated from the reaction mixture or from the returned portion thereof before or after admixture with the fresh gas, in particular by drying agents containing potassium carbonate at 90-130 DEG C. in the presence of water. In this way water may be removed from the reaction mixture as well as CO2. In an example, fresh gas containing H2 and CO in the ratio 1.37:1 is mixed with 2.62 times its volume of recycle gas at 330 DEG C. to give a temperature of 260 DEG C. at which the combined gas is fed to a Ni-Mn-Al catalyst, ratio 10:2:1. The exit gas at 410-430 DEG C. passes to a steam boiler to cool it to 340 DEG C. The part not recycled is cooled to separate water, and CO2 removed.
