705,598. Masts. THEAKSTON, J. H. Feb. 12, 1952 [Feb. 13, 1951], No. 3460/51. Class 20 (1) A method of erecting masts, posts or the like such as for supporting an aerial A, Fig. 1, comprises elevating two masts M, T, side by side by adding sections to each mast alternately, the two masts being connected one to the other at successive points in such a way as to permit relative vertical movement. Each tubular metal section 4 is provided with a spigot 5 at one end to engage the bore of the adjacent section, three sections being preassembled to form a unit. One of the masts, such as T, is raised whilst mast M supports it through S-shaped hooks 8 and the additional unit is added at the bottom. Then mast M is raised whilst mast T supports it, another unit being added to the bottom of mast M and so on. Guy ropes 7 are connected to lugs 6. For a temporary structure both masts are left in position, but for a permanent arrangement mast T is removed, connectors 8, Fig. 2, then being used comprising a furcated portion secured to mast T carrying a withdrawable pin 9 actuated by a pivoted crank 10 and drop wire, thus permitting the connector to be lowered past lugs 6. The masts may be raised for adding the sections by a lever system, jack, winch or crane. In a modification each section 4 is provided at one of its ends with a sleeve which engages the adjacent tube and is secured by a set screw, or, alternatively, a screw joint may be employed. According to the Provisional Specification the releasable connectors may be H-shaped members.
