705,586. Cutting-tools. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 10, 1952 [Oct. 12, 1950], No. 24979/50. Class 83 (3) A method of producing.rod or rod-like forms of polytetrafluorethylene and like plastic materials comprises the step of embedding a cutting tool having a cutting edge in the form of a ring in a body of the material and passing the tool through the material thereby to cut a rod which passes, as it is cut, through the ring of the tool. One rod may be produced by turning from a cylinder of the material 2, Fig. 2, carried on a mandrel 3, the tool being arranged to feed along the work as in screw-cutting but with pitch slightly greater than the diameter of the rod to be produced. Alternatively, the tool may be moved transversely across the face of the work to produce the rod. The rod 1 is produced in the form of a helix and is afterwards straightened. The tool comprises a ring or tube 5, Figs. 4 and 5, sharpened at one end and formed on a bar 6 held in a toot-rest. The axis of the ring &c. is transverse to the bar-axis and the bar is tapered in thickness to produce a cutting ridge 8 behind the tubular portion.
