Abstract
705,511. Ejector seats for aircraft. M. L. AVIATION CO., Ltd., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. Feb. 8. 1952 [Feb. 16, 1951], No. 3868/51. Addition to 590,253. Class 4 A modification of the safety device for use by pilots of aircraft as claimed in the parent Specification including a gun for set ejection comprises three or more cylinders, telescopically arranged and mounted to slide in an upward direction, in which the outer cylinder is fixed to the aircraft and the inner cylinder to the seat and the remaining cylinder or cylinders are retained by the fixed outer cylinder when fully extended under the action of the explosive charge. The cylinder arrangement comprises an outer cylinder 1, formed with a sleeve 2, to which a base cap 3 is attached for connection to the aircraft structure; an inner cylinder 4 formed at its base with a sleeve 7 and at its upper end with a connection to a trunnion block 5 on the back of the seat, and an intermediate cylinder 6. The sleeve 2 is formed with radial grooves to accommodate balls 10 held in contact with recesses in the sleeve 7 by a retaining ring 14 held in the locking position by a spring 31. The end face of a sleeve 8 attached to the cylinder 6 is placed in communication with the explosive gases by the provision of ports 13 in the sleeve 7 and the outer face of the cylinder is formed with longitudinally directed serrations 16 which cut into a light alloy shock absorber ring 17 within the top of the outer cylinder when the cylinders are fully extended under the action of the explosive charge. The breech 18 is pivotally mounted at 28 to side plates 19 on the trunnion block 5, a roller 20 on the breech engaging an arcuate slot 21 in one side plate. The breech is swung out of engagement with an exhaust 35 and into line with the cylinders by means of a cam 22 which is pivoted at 23 and moved by a rod 34 to engage the roller 20. A pair of links 25, 27 actuate the cartridge firing mechanism when the breech 18 is aligned with the cylinders and expanding gases depress the ring 14 to free the balls 10 and release the inner cylinder which leaves the aircraft with the seat when the intermediate and outer cylinders are in their fully extended position. Specification 645,323 is referred to and the Provisional Specification refers to Specification 704,332.
