705,424. Vehicle locking devices. NEIMAN, A. Aug. 8, 1951 [Sept. 1, 1950; Dec. 15, 1950], No. 18672/51. Class 79(3) In a safety device for preventing theft of motor vehicles having controlling means for controlling the transmission arranged adjacent to the steering spindle, the device is constructed in such a manner that the steering spindle and the controlling means are locked by the safety device when the locking means of the latter is in locking position. In the arrangement according to Fig. 2, a reinforcing sleeve 3 secured to a steering spindle 2, is provided with a recess 5 for a spring loaded locking pin 4 of a locking bolt 4, 11 and a reinforcing sleeve 9 secured to a transmission controlling tube 7 is provided with an aperture 10, in register with an aperture 10<SP>1</SP> of the tube 7, for a cylindrical portion 11 slidable on the pin 4, the arrangement being such that the bolt 4, 11 engages the aperture when the tube 7 is in the position corresponding to idle running position of the transmission. A stop 12 on the portion 11 engages a recess 13 in the pin 4. A protecting jacket 15 surrounds the tube 7. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tube 7 and sleeve 9 are provided with a second set of apertures by which the transmission may be locked in the lowest or reverse gear position. In the arrangement according to Fig. 4 in which a tubular steering spindle 24 passes through a casing 23, a reinforcing sleeve 25 is shrunk on the spindle 24 and is provided with a recess 26 for engagement with a projection 27 of a main spring-loaded locking bolt 28. An auxiliary spring-loaded locking bolt 31 engages a recess 32 of a transmission controlling rod 33 and is maintained in the locking position shown, by 'the locking bolt 28. In another arrangement Fig. 5 (not shown), the auxiliary locking bolt is controlled by a pin carried by the main locking bolt and the axes of the bolts are parallel. In modifications, the auxiliary bolt may comprise spring loaded tumblers, tipping levers, bolt locking means or locking linkages or the like. In all arrangements a key-operated or combination lock may be used.
