Abstract
705,234. Preventing corrosion. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 28, 1952, No. 10645/52. Class 123(1) Corrosion in the vapour space of a vessel containing a liquid which evolves acidic vapours, e.g. crude petroleum oil, is minimized by introducing into the vapour space ammonia in an amount substantially less than that required completely to neutralize the vapours, e.g. from 3 per cent to 20 per cent of the required amount. This is equivalent to maintaining in the vapour space a concentration of ammonia equal to 0.1 per cent to 0.8 per cent of the volume of the vapour space. The ammonia may be introduced through a pipe terminating in the centre of the top of the vapour space.
