Abstract
705,086. Blasting devices. CANADIAN INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 18, 1951, No. 17014/51. Class 9(1) A connecting device for joining igniter cord to safety fuze cord comprises a cylindrical tube 3 slotted at one end to hold an ignition cord 5 placed between the prongs 6 of the slot. The safety fuze 1 is placed in the opposite end of the tube which is then crimped on to the fuze. A plug 4 of an ignition composition is placed in the tube to act as a booster for the fuze cord. In a modification, Fig. 4, the tube contains a pressed base charge 7 and a pressed top charge 4 adjacent the safety fuze 1. The igniter cord 5 is placed in a transverse slot extending into the base charge. The flap 8 formed by the slot is then bent inwards to secure the cord 5 which is then almost surrounded by the base charge. The connector may be of metal, or metal alloy or other water-impervious material and a charge impervious to water is chosen for the base charge. The base charge may comprise nitrocellulose 80-95 per cent, lead dioxide 5-19 per cent, and antimony sulphide 1-7 per cent, all parts being by weight. The nitrocellulose may be replaced by trinitrotoluene, tetryl or other nitrohydrocarbons which are water insoluble and the lead dioxide may be replaced by barium chromate or red lead while calcium silicide or silicon may replace the antimony sulphide. The top charge 4 may comprise nitrocellulose 4-15 per cent, lead dioxide 70-90 per cent and silicon metal powder 5-15 per cent, all parts being by weight. Specification 541,202 and U.S.A.
