Abstract
705,028. Electric beam apparatus. RAULAND CORPORATION. Sept. 27, 1951 [Sept. 27, 1950], No. 22563/51. Class 39(1) An apparatus for inscribing a pattern in a sheet of material having a given secondary emission characteristic comprises means for directing a beam of charged particles (e.g. electrons) towards an elementary area of the sheet and means for deflecting the beam to a further elementary area in response to a signal produced when the secondary emission of the first area is altered due to bombardment of the beam. The apparatus may be used to form the mosaic screen of a storage tube 10, Fig. 1. A rectangular plate 13 of quartz, glass, or mica, coated with a metallic layer 12, which may be of silver or copper, is mounted in the tube and one of the electron guns is used to bombard the metal layer so as to melt it at the point of impact of the beam. When the layer melts the secondary emission changes and a pulse is developed in the load 28 and fed through a pulse separator 29 which is coupled through an integrator and a D.C. amplifier to the horizontal deflection coil 34 so that the beam is deflected on to the next elementary area to be treated. At the end of a line the beam is moved off the edge of the screen and a pulse with a sharper leading edge is developed in the load 28; the pulse separator 29 feeds these sharper pulses through a similar integrator and amplifier to the vertical deflection coil 43, so that the beam is moved down to the next line, and at the same time discharges the horizontal integrator so that the beam is moved back to the beginning of the line. When the whole screen has been scanned the vertical integrators may be discharged by manually operating a switch 46, thus causing the whole cycle of operation to be repeated. The load 28 is also coupled through a discharge device 50 and integrator 51 to a relay 27 which is so arranged that when, after the scanning has been completed, the beam moves off the screen altogether the relay lights a warning lamp 56 and applies a negative bias to the electron gun to cut off the beam. When the screen has been processed in this way the tube may be used as a storage tube. Specification 677,300 is referred to.
