Abstract
A method of bonding polytetrafluorethylene to metal consists in bringing a layer of polytetrafluorethylene in powder form into contact with a sintered or unsintered compact of the metal and compressing and heating at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the polytetrafluorethylene to sinter any unsintered powder and to cause a part only of the layer to penetrate into the metal. Iron or bronze powder of 30 B.S.S.-100 B.S.S. is sintered into discs and the discs subjected to 500-1000 lbs./sq. in. at 350 DEG C. for 1 hr. with a layer of extruded p.t.f.e. between them. Alternatively, the discs may be sintered from a compressed double layer of 200 B.S.S. powder and 30 B.S.S. powder. The p.t.f.e. may be in the form of a powder compact and heated for 1 1/2 hrs. at 360 DEG C. Oil or water quenching may be employed. In a further example, iron powder disc compacts of 100-200 B.S.S. size are sintered in a protective atmosphere at 1100-1130 DEG C. for 1/2 hr. P.t.f.e. powder is placed between the discs and compressed at 1 ton/sq. in. The assembly is the heated to 360 DEG C. for 1 hr. and finally cooled under pressure by water or air. The method may be used to bond a plug of p.t.f.e. in a cylinder. The bonded material may be used for electrical components and tong-tips. The p.t.f.e. may contain a filler such as metal.
