Class 83 (3) A machine tool, having a rotary spindle 7 and means for facilitating the mounting of a tool or holder on the spindle, comprises a retractable tool-supporting &c. guiding means mounted on a member operatively connected with the spindle, the tool or holder having a portion co-operating with the guiding means. In a boring, facing and milling machine, the device supports a facemill 52, a boring head 53, a facing tool 54 and a boring-bar support 55. The tools and holders are each formed with a guiding groove 57 and are separated by bars 21 on a slide 16. The slide 16 is carried on a support 9 pivoted at 11 on the headstock 6 and is raised and lowered to position a tool opposite the spindle by a crank 48 and bevel and ratchet or other gearing. When a tool has been used it is removed from the slide and the subsequent tool positioned on the lowest bar 21. This lowest bar is longitudinally adjustable and is slightly tapered to permit vertical adjustment of the cutter. In a modification, only one cutter is carried by the slide. In a further modification, the tool is supported by levers 68, 69, Fig. 11, which hold the tool on the spindle-axis while it is secured and are then swung back against stops 73, 74. This construction may be modified by the provision of three levers forming the three sides of an open-topped square. In yet another modification, the groove 57, Fig. 19, of the tool is supported by levers 68, 69, headed levers 107 which are swung to move the tool up to the spindle 7 and are then swung through a further arc into an inoperative position. The tool may, alternatively, be provided with a ridge engaged by grooves on the slide or supporting members.
