Abstract

704,470. Winding drum brakes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. March 28, 1952 [April 5, 1951], No. 7936/51. Class 103(1) Fluid pressure operated brake control apparatus for hoist and winding mechanism of the type wherein a cam disc 11, geared to the winding shaft, causes alteration of the position of a valve mechanism 17, 18 so that the flow of oil to the brake cylinder is restricted except at the beginning and end of a wind so as to limit the pressure applied to the brakes, is further controlled in accordance with the direction and speed of winding. As shown in Fig. 1, this further control is provided by means of a hydraulic coupling 1 rotated by the winding shaft, which when the speed is sufficiently great raises a weight 4 to close a valve 5 in the pipe joining inlet and outlet chambers 33 and 34 of the governor valve 6. The raising of the weight is permitted on a raising wind but prevented by means not shown on a lowering wind. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the valve 5 is controlled by a piston 21 moved in a cylinder 22 when a pump 28 rotated by the wind shaft produces a certain pressure corresponding to a certain speed of winding. When lowering, the pump 28 sucks liquid from the reservoir 23 and therefore the valve 5 is not closed.
