Abstract

A detergent composition comprises (1) a water-soluble alkyl benzene sulphonate containing at least one alkyl group with 9-18 carbon atoms, and (2) a water-soluble monoalkyl ether of an alkylene glycol or polyalkylene glycol monosulphate, whose alkyl radical contains 10-22 carbon atoms and whose alkylene radical contains 2-4 carbon atoms. The monoalkyl ether sulphate may be derived from ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or triethylene glycol, and may be made by adding ethylene oxide to fatty alcohols such as lauryl, myristyl, cetyl, stearyl and oleyl alcohols, the "oxo" alcohols or alcohols obtained by hydrogenation of fatty acids derived from paraffin hydrocarbons, and sulphating and neutralizing the products. The proportion of the two components may be in the ratio of 1 part by weight of the alkyl benzene sulphonate to 0.2 to 5 parts by weight of the alkylether glycol monosulphate. Other substances which may be included in the compositions include meta-, poly- and pyro-phosphates, orthophosphates, silicates, carbonates, sulphates, carboxymethyl cellulose, solvents such as alcohols, hydrocarbons chlorohydrocarbons, monoaryl ethers of polyvalent aliphatic alcohols, or pyridine bases, and preserving, disinfecting and tanning agents.
