Abstract

704,243. Press for lettering book covers. SAMPSON, R. V. Dec. 21, 1951 [Sept. 26, 1950], No. 23557/50. Class 100 (2) A lettering press for stamping letters &c. on the spines B1 of book covers B comprises a rotary holder 4 supported to enable individual type pieces or individual lines of type to be moved into and out of contact with the spine of the cover, and a carrier for the cover including a member 12 of inverted V-section over which the slightly open book may be supported and which is adjustable relatively to the type holder to enable the book to be adjusted bodily and various portions along the length of the spine to be moved into position below the type holder. The press comprises a frame 1 with a sub-frame 2 on which is mounted a carrier 3 on which the rotary type holder 4 is vertically slidable. The holder 4 is actuated through a linkage 8 by a handle 5 pivoted at 6 and carrying a counter balance weight 7. Alternatively the holder may be displaced vertically by a foot treadle. The holder 4 is rotatable so that the selected type can be brought to the operative position opposite the spine B 1 of the cover, and may carry spaced single pieces of type T, or sets of type pieces designed for single line blocking. An electric resistance heater may be incorporated for heating the type. The holder is locked against rotation during stamping by means of a plunger 9 which enters one of a ring of holes in the back of the holder when a roller 10 on the plunger rides over a cam track 11 as the holder is lowered. A depending portion 13 of the bar 12 slides between spaced parallel guide bars 14 extending from front to rear. The book may be clamped to the carrier by plates 15, supported by telescopic rods 16, the ends of the rods at each side of the carrier being connected by clamps 17. The faces of the plates 15 against the cover B may be ribbed and the upper edges may have an inturned portion to fit under the edge of the spine. In order that the portion of the curved spine to be stamped may be brought into parallelism with the type piece the bars 14 are fixed to tiltable tubes 18, 19 fitted internally with an axially slidable but non-rotatable block 20 through which a threaded rod 21 is screwed, the block being raised or lowered by turning the rod. The block 20 is formed with a lateral pivot pin 22 which constitutes the axis about which the carrier can be swung and which is adjustable to correspond with the centre of curvature of the spine. The pin 22 extends through a slot 18a in tube 18 and a slot 23a in a second tube 23 to be connected to a block 24 in the latter, and is secured to one of the blocks 20 or 24 and freely connected to the other. Tubes 23 are fixed to the frame, and blocks 20, 24 are movable vertically by a threaded spindle 25 in tube 23. The bars 14, carrier 12, and tubes 18, 19 are swung about pins 22 by depressing pedals 27 which are mounted on a shaft 28 fitted with links 29 which in turn are pivotally connected to the lower ends of bars 30. The upper ends of bars 30 are connected by a spindle 31 having links 32 rigidly secured to the rails 14. The lower ends of spindles 25, 21 are fitted with bevel gears 33, 34 and the drive is transmitted to the rear by bevel gears 35 on the ends of shaft 36. To adjust the axis 22 the carrier 12 is turned to the vertical position, gears 33 are raised from an inoperative position against the influence of springs 37 by means of cams 40 on shaft 36 turned by means of handle 38, a control wheel 41, common to the upper ends of all the threaded spindles, is secured to spindle 25 and turned to raise or lower pin 22, and when the required setting is obtained the cam shaft 39 is turned back to disengage gears 33. If it is necessary to vary the distance between the top edge of carrier 12 with respect to holder 4, gears 33 are left out of mesh and spindles 21 are turned to move the carrier up or down very slightly with housings 18. Gears 33, 34 may be replaced by spur gears and the spur gears, replacing gears 34 fitted on their undersides with bevel gears to mesh with gears 35. Specification 703,839 is referred to.
