Abstract
703,894. Waveguides. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 17, 1952 [March 20, 1951], No. 6833/52. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL(c)] A radio transceiving device for carrier wave pulses comprises transmitting and receiving waveguides 3, 5 directionally coupled by slots 9 in a common wall so as to decouple the transmitter 2 from the receiver 7, and gas and/or vapour switch cells 11 at the slots completing the decoupling by blocking the slots and receiver waveguide each time a pulse is transmitted to a common transmitting and receiving aerial 4. By this arrangement voltage spikes are prevented from reaching the receiver at the commencement of a transmitted pulse due to the finite time for ionization of the switch cells, and may be directed to another aerial or absorbed by a wedge-shaped plate 12 of resistance material at the end of the receiver waveguide remote from the receiver. Further the coupling factor may be unity so that waves reflected at 12 are almost entirely retransferred back to the waveguide 3. The directional coupling may be formed by a transverse slot in the common wall and by a longitudinal slot near one end of the transverse slot, so that the coupling is little dependent on frequency variations about the mean frequency. In a modification gas-tight windows of insulating material are placed across the receiver waveguide at both sides of the coupling slots and the latter filled by insulating gas seals to form a chamber containing gas or other ionizing medium, across the slot seals of which a glow discharge spreads on a transmitted pulse. The waveguides may alternatively connect at an angle. A mechanical rotary switch may replace the gas cells. The arrangement may be applied to radar or duplex pulse communication systems.
