Abstract

N-(p-bromobenzyl) N-a -pyridyl N1 N1-dimethyl ethylene diamine is prepared by the method disclosed by Huttner et al Journal Amer. Chem. Soc. 68 (1946), 1999 using p-bromo-benzyl bromide in place of benzyl bromide. The o-bromo benzyl derivative is prepared in a similar manner.ALSO:An ointment for protecting the skin from the harmful constituents of sunlight and artificial light has as ultra-violet protective substance a benzyl-a-pyridyl-dimethyl-ethylene diamine halogenated in the benzyl radical, and/or a salt thereof. The preferred antihistamine is N-p-bromo-benzyl N-a-pyridyl N1, N1-dimethyl ethylene diamine. Specified salts are hydrochloride, sulphate, phosphate, perchlorate, thiocyanate, formate, maleate, cinnamate, salicylate, p-aminobenzoate and p-aminosalicylate. The efficacy of the preparation is increased by the last named salt, which may be replaced by p-aminosalicylic acid per se, or an alkali metal, alkali earth metal or organic base salt thereof. Opaque pigments such as ochre or alizarin madder may also be present. The example is of a solid oil-in-water emulsion containing in addition to the antihistamine, sodium p-aminosalicylate, adeps lanae, wax-like polyethylene oxides and eucerin anhydride (oxycholesterin bodies from wool grease in paraffin ointment) N-(p-bromobenzyl) N-a-pyridyl N1 N1-dimethyl ethylene diamine prepared according to Hutter et al. J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 68 (1946). 1999 using p-bromo-benzyl bromide in place of benzyl bromide (see Group IV (b)).
