Class 106 (1) A record card C is marked with data representing areas in two or more colours of a complementary character either one colour alone for distinguishing two or more types of data, or compound colours produced by colouring a single area with two colours. The data is sensed by reading reflected light from the data representing areas B, Fig. 2, by means of photocells D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>, to which colour filters E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> are applied to selectively associate one photocell with one colour. Fig. 3 shows an alternative arrangement in which a single photocell D without a colour filter is employed, and in which two light sources L<SP>1</SP>,. L<SP>2</SP> each provided with a colour filter E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> matching one colour and in the data representing areas all switched alternately to illluminate the card first with one colour and then with the other. Illumination of the card with one colour causes the marks of that colour to fade into the card and causes the marks of the other-colour to stand out as dark areas enabling them to influence the photocell D. Figs. 4 and 5 show an apparatus for marking a card with coloured areas. A card C is supplied on a carriage K beneath two differently coloured ribbons R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>. A solenoid operated striker arm P carries a striker a which strikes the ribbon R' or R' when the magnet A is operated. The position of the carriage K may be varied to bring the card under the desired coloured ribbon. An apparatus is also suggested in diagrammatic form for passing a card beating coloured data representing marks through a series of chambers containing chemicals to selectively remove one or all of the coloured marks when these are no longer required.
