Abstract

703,438. Control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 29, 1951 [June 17, 1950], No. 12566/51. Class 38(3) [Also in Groups XXXV, XXXVIII and XXXIX] Directional control of a motor is effected by the polarity of a D.C. signal applied to the control windings 17, 18 of a pushpull magnetic amplifier (see Group XXXIX). As shown in Fig. 1, a D.C. motor 10 has split field windings Z1, Z2 each connected in series with a pair of reactance windings 13, 16 and 14, 15 through rectifiers - 19-22. Unequal saturation of the magnetic cores 11, 12 due to a control signal then produces a resultant field in the form of unidirectional flux pulses having a direction determined by the signal polarity. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, a two phase A.C. motor has split field windings Z7, Z8 connected in series with reactance windings 13, 14 and 15, 16 respectively. An alternating resultant flux is produced by the field windings when a D.C. control signal is received, the phase of the flux with respect to the A.C. supply determining the direction of motor rotation.
