Abstract
Polymeric esters suitable as plasticizers, particularly for vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers, are prepared by polymerizing one or more esters of saturated fatty acids and b -d -unsaturated alcohols, the esters containing 7 to 14 carbon atoms in the molecule, in the presence of a chain stopper to produce a product having an average molecular weight of not more than 1,000, from which fractions having boiling points up to 200 DEG C. under a pressure of 1 mm. Hg are removed by distillation. Suitable chain stoppers are aldehydes, ketones, and hydrocarbons with a mobile hydrogen atom; acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cumene and triphenyl methane being specified. Generally they are used in proportions up to 200 per cent. by weight of the monomer. Specified esters are allyl butyrate, allyl ester of a C6-oxo fatty acid fraction and the allyl esters of oxo-fatty acids, consisting of C6, C7, C8 and C9 fatty acids. Polymerization may be effected in solution or in emulsion, at a temperature, for example of 200 DEG C. A catalyst, such as di-tert butyl peroxide, may be present. The products may also be used as lubricants and lubricant additives. Specification 703,252 is referred to.
