Abstract

703,269. Continuous casting-machines, casting processes. GOSS, N. P. April 17, 1951 [Nov. 21, 1950], No. 28467/50. Class 83 (1) In the continuous coating of steel in a vertical mould, a layer of refractory material which is molten at a temperature below the melting point of the steel is maintained above and in contact with the upper surface of the molten metal and pouring takes place on to and through this layer. The refractory material is a fusible non-metallic substance chemically inert to the metal being cast, for example, boro-silicate glass, cryolite, barium bromide, barium carbonate, barium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, magnesium silicide, magnesium silicate, manganese chloride, manganese silicide, potassium aluminium silicate, potassium chloride, potassium carbonate, potassium fluoride, sodium aluminium silicate, sodium borate, sodium carbonate, sodium silicates, sodium chloride, lime glass, lead glass, silica glass. Molten metal is poured from a ladle 14 into a feed vessel 16 having an outlet 19 about six inches above the top of the metal in the mould 11. The refractory material 21 is introduced into the mould through the gap 22 between the mould and the vessel 16 which gap also serves as a viewing window.
