Abstract
703,205. Buckles. WILLS & CO., Ltd., A., and WILLS, A. R. Oct. 29, 1952 [Nov. 2, 1951], No. 25680/51. Class 43 A buckle or like fastening comprising an inner frame which is covered by. a closed envelope of thermoplastice material Is characterized in that the envelope is formed from two initially flat sheets of thermoplastic material conforming substantially to the shape of the frame and so dimensioned that when placed one on each side of the frame their peripheries extend beyond the respective peripheral edges of the frame to provide flanges which are united by welding around the inside and outside edges of the frame. The frame may be a metal stamping, or made from cardboard or hardboard, and the covering of polyvinyl chloride. In an example the frame 1, Fig. 4, consists of. a tin plate stamping with limbs that are channelled at the back and have a convex or bowed front surface, with a central cross-piece C which, intermediate its ends, is reduced in width to provide a bearing C<1> for the inner end of a pivoted prong (not shown) of conventional form. In making the buckle the frame is placed upon a sheet 3 of polyvinyl chloride on the base plate of a press, and covered by a sheet 2 of the same material, and a platen which is grooved and channelled on its underside to conform to the shape of the frame 1 is pressed downwardly upon the assembled. parts. The base plate may be providedwith locating pins which extend upwardly through registering holes 10 in the frame and in the sheets 2, 3 on opposite sides of it. Heating means of known type is provided for heating at least the edge portions of either or both the base plate and the platen. The outer and inner edges 2a, 2b of the sheet 2 are thus pressed upon, and welded to, the corresponding edges 3a, 3b of the flat backing-sheet 3. The appearance of the finished buckle may be enhanced by forming, during the welding, a series of regularly spaced markings simulating stitches.
