Abstract
703,035. Rotary furnaces. INDUSTRIAL & FINANCIAL ASSOCIATION, Inc. Jan. 29, 1952, No. 2367/52. Class 51 (2) Unequal expansion between the metal casing and the refractory lining of an externally heated rotary furnace for remelting metals is compensated for by forming the casing of spaced bars connected between end plates, and arranging a resilient connection between one end plate and the refractory lining. In the preferred embodiment, the refractory lining 5 is built up of tongue-and-groove blocks, the metal casing comprises peripherally spaced bars 4 extending between end plates 2 and 3, and the resilient connection comprises a movable plate 13 resiliently pressed against the lining 5 by push rods 14 extending freely through the end plate 2 and subjected to the action of springs 15 interposed between abutments on the push rods and members 16 connected rigidly to the end plate 2 by tie bolts 17. The tie bolts have screwed ends passing through the members 16 and provided with nuts whereby the pressure of the springs 15 can be adjusted. The end plates 2 and 3 carry trunnions 7 and 8 supported in bearings on fixed supports 11 and 12 respectively and cavities 6 between the end walls of the lining 5 and the plate 13 and end plate 3 respectively are filled with insulating material, e.g. asbestos.
