Abstract
563,225. Electrically heated kilns. MOORE, B. J., and MOORE, B. C. Feb. 5, 1943, No. 1909. [Class 39 (iii)] A tunnel kiln 11 is recessed at 12 to accommodate electric heaters 19 between pillars 13. The pillars are grooved to receive thin refractory vertical plates 15, 17 forming a doublewalled cavity 19 which is packed with powdered graphite or carborundum to form a resistance heater. The cavity 19 widens outwardly at both ends 20, 21 to reduce the temperature at the ends. The spaces between the plates 15, 15 and 17, 17 are packed with refractory material such as alumina, or sand. In an alternative form, the powdered. graphite is contained in double-walled cylindrical housings similarly packed with refractory material, in which case the pillars 13 are unnecessary. A kiln comprise a pair of parallel tunnels separated by a wall of zig-zag configuration in plan to provide oppositely directed recesses for the reception of heating elements.
