Abstract
702,487. Work benches. CLAYTON MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 28, 1951, No. 20273/51. Class 61 [Also in Groups XXIV and XXVII] An engine or motor support, particularly for a test bed support for coupling an engine 13 to a dynamometer 12, comprises four vertical columns 19-22 adjustable both longitudinally and transversely of a base 11 to receive various different sizes of engine. The front of the engine rests by means of its normal supporting flanges 52, Fig. 6, upon brackets 50 adjustable on a cross member 48 between the columns 19, 20, this member 48 being adjustable for height by brackets 42 adapted to slide in slots 39 of the columns. A cable 53 serves to clamp the engine down. The rear of the engine is supported by a housing 71, Fig. 4, in which is rotatably mounted an adaptor shaft 82 for coupling the engine to the dynamometer shaft 90. The housing 71 is carried by an elongated plate 66, see also Fig. 2, which extends transversely and is supported at its ends by the columns 21, 22 on further adjustable brackets 42. The housing 71 is also adapted to receive an annular adaptor ring 75 to fit the circular opening 63 of,the normal clutch housing 60 of the engine. This ring is readily changeable according to the diameter of the opening on different engines. A short shaft 92 with appropriate splined ends is provided to couple the normal splined socket 64 of the driven clutch plate 65 with an internally splined member 85 of the adaptor shaft 82. The plate 66 and housing 71 are clamped to the clutch housing 60 by means of bolts 111, Fig. 2, passing through slots 109 of angularly adjustable arms 104 clamped by a wing nut 101 to the housing 71, the bolts 111 passing through openings 110 in the plate 66 and engaging in existing holes 62 of the clutch housing. In an alternative arrangement, the arms 104 are dispensed with, the bolts 111 passing through slots in the plate 66 to clamp it directly on to the clutch housing.
