Abstract
702,370. Treating liquids with gases. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER. June 11, 1952 [July 2, 1951], No. 14762/52. Class 55 (2) In treating liquids with gases or vapours particularly absorbing sulphur trioxide gas in sulphuric acid, cooling the hot acid with air and washing the waste gases with acid, liquid is raised by gas under pressure through upright or inclined tubes extending above the liquid level in a horizontal or inclined container or duct through the upper part of which gas flows from end to end, the liquid running down again transversely to the direction of flow of the gas into the body of liquid. In a trough 1 with a cover 2 and inlets and outlets 3g for gas and 3f for liquid, rising pipes 4 carrying preferably staggered discs 6 are supported on a grating 5. Six different ways shown of introducing gas into the pipes comprise injector nozzles 9 for the pressure medium, a gas manifold 8a and enlarged lower portions of the pipes with serrated edges, and depending gas pipes 9c ... f. The pipes 9d are supplied with gas withdrawn from the trough and blown back by injectors 15d. Gas for pipes 9e, 9f, is kept separate from gas in the trough, being blown through a manifold 23 and withdrawn after emerging from the rising pipes through a compartment 16. Deflectors 7, 7a ... d for the liquid at the pipe outlets may be provided, and partitions 24 forming imperfect seals may subdivide the bath in the direction of flow to check intermixing of liquid at different stages of treatment. In modifications the rising pipes in a brick-lined trough or tube stand on bricks &c. and are spaced by short tubes. A trough cover may include an internal lining of glass pipes spaced from it by a layer of glass wool. For treatment above or below atmospheric pressure several containers may be superposed liquid flowing successively therethrough preferably inside an upright tube. Steam coils &c. may operate the pressure release by evaporating part of the liquid and cooled coils may be included for condensing surplus vapour.
