Abstract
<PICT:0728543/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0728543/IV (b)/2> In a process for producing hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of synthesis catalyst which is disposed in a hydrocarbon oil (contact oil), the synthesis gas being introduced at the bottom of a column of said oil which moves in the same direction as the gas, the oil which is circulated after separation from hydrocarbons and residual gas, and the synthesis gas are introduced into the reaction chamber below cooling means arranged therein. The catalyst may be fixed or suspended in the oil. The cooling means may comprise a number of stages, the mixture of synthesis gas and contact oil flowing successively through stages at increasing temperature. The reaction chamber is preferably a tower with a high ratio of height to diameter, e.g. 10 : 1. Alternatively, individual reactor units, each with at least one internal cooler, may be arranged with circulation of oil in each unit, if desired with different concentrations of catalyst, while synthesis gas flows successively through them. Nozzles for supply of the gas and oil to the base of the reactor may be provided so that the rate of flow of the oil is different from, preferably greater than that of the gas near the inlet so that the gas is distributed as fine bubbles. Synthesis gas may also be introduced into the return pipe for contact oil. Additional contact oil may be introduced at the top of the reactor to wash the walls and remove any deposit of catalyst while the reactor may be enlarged at the upper end to facilitate separation of contact oil from dissolved gases. Reaction temperatures below 280 DEG C. are suitable for pressures of about 14-20 atmospheres. The tower 1, Fig. 1, is fed from nozzles 2 with synthesis gas from pipe 3 and contact oil from pipe 4. Cooling devices 6 . . . 9 each comprise vertical tubes through which cooling medium circulates by pipes 10 . . . 12 in the same direction as the gas and oil. Vapours and residual gas leave at 15 while contact oil is returned via line 16, which may contain a further cooling device, and pump 5. A nozzle 2 is shown in Fig. 2, the inner tube 18 for gas being surrounded by a flared tube 20 for oil which flows at high speed through the gap 22.
