Abstract

702,237. Valves. FARRINGDON WORKS & H. PONTIFEX & SONS, Ltd., and KNOWLES, G. Oct. 8, 1951, No. 23411/51. Class 135 A gas pressure regulating device employed in counter-pressure bottle filling machines for controlling, during a filling operation the exhaust of pressure from bottles through a pressure balancing chamber to regulate the final filling level, comprises a displaceable member, e.g. the diaphragm 4, subjected to the differential action of the gas pressures in the balancing chamber applied via connection 45 to chamber 44, and in the reservoir of liquid to be bottled, applied via connection 43 to chamber 42a, mechanically adjustable means for applying additional pressure to the diaphragm in opposition to the balancing chamber gas pressure and a needle valve 41 displaceable by the diaphragm to control leakage of this pressure. Air pressure from the same source is supplied to both balancing chamber and reservoir, and the spring 18 is adjusted through the worm and pinion 21, 20, screwed spindle 19, and spring abutment shaft 12 splined at 27, 28, to prevent rotation, until it exerts on the diaphragm a pressure equal to the difference in level between the liquid in the reservoir and the liquid in the filled bottle so that a predetermined back pressure is exerted in the balancing chamber and in chamber 44 which stops the rise of liquid in the bottle when the desired level is reached. The angular displacement of the spindle 19 is indicated by an index wheel 29 and by the serration on the worm handle 24 which engages a spring-pressed plunger. The leakage of air from chamber 44 is controlled by a valve face 35 carrying the needle valve engaging an annular seat 36a surrounding the needle valve orifice. The initial position of the seat is adjusted by screwing the shaft 37a in the casing and the position of the needle valve orifice is adjusted by screwing the hollow shaft 39 in the shaft 37a.
