Abstract
702,213. Combustion apparatus. BIGWOOD & SON, Ltd., J. Aug. 15, 1951 [Aug. 24, 1950], No. 20929/50. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XI] In solid fuel combustion apparatus of the type in which combustion is effected by downwardly directing one or more jets of air on to the free surface of the fuel in the combustion chamber the wall of the chamber is provided with an opening which is normally closed by a movable gas tight door and is so disposed as to provide access to the combustion surface of the fuel to facilitate the removal therefrom of clinker. As shown the combustion chamber is of box-like form defined at one end by an inclined plate 13 and at the other by a water cooled wall 17. The chamber sides 15 and top 16 are also water cooled the liquid being circulated by a pump 18 having an inlet 19 and outlet 20 which is connected through a valve 21 to pipes 22 which supply water to the walls 15. Fuel is fed to the chamber from the hopper 12 through an inlet 10. An air jet 27 is supplied from an air blower 28 driven by an electric motor 29 the air passing through a duct 30 which is provided with a damper 31. A thermostat may be used to regulate the supply of air by controlling the fan motor or the damper. Initial ignition of the fuel is effected by allowing paraffin in a tank 33 to fall onto the jet sprayed fuel surface area 35. The front and sides of the hopper are lined with refractory material 36 and the whole apparatus is supported on wheels 38. Clinker is removed from the fire through a tubular opening 39 in one side of the combustion chamber. The opening is closed by a refractory lined door 41 mounted on the furnace side by a hinged strap 43. At the other side of the chamber an opening 47 is provided so that a similar door may be fitted if desired. This opening is closed by a refractory lined plate 48. Opposite sides of the chamber may be connected by waterways and further openings may be provided in the structure of the chamber to provide access to the interior thereof for ignition purposes. The liquid heated in the chamber walls may be used alone or added to that heated in a boiler by the combustion gases or the heated liquid may be passed through a heat exchanger. Where the apparatus is used for drying crops the temperature of the gases may be reduced by diluting them with air. Specification 579,324 is referred to.
