Class 39(4) An ion exchange substance containing a metal X in exchange positions, is neutron irradiated so that X undergoes an (n, y) reaction, the ion exchange substance then is treated with a solution of a compound which forms a complex with unbound atoms of X to give a solution of radioactive X. The exchange substance may be sulphonated polystyrene or sodio-alumino-silicate, the metal X may be copper, mercury, zinc, lanthanum or iron, while the complex forming compounds are diphenylthiocarbozone, the ammonium salt of niteroso-#-phenylhydroxylamine and α-benzionoxime for copper, 5-diphenyl carbazide for mercury, diphenylthiocarbazone or 8-hydroxyquinoline for zinc, and nitroso-#-phenylhydroxylamine for iron or lanthanum.
