Abstract

702,085. Pipe joints and closures. WHEATON BRASS WORKS. Sept. 14, 1951 [March 21, 1951], No. 21660/51. Classes 99 (1) and 99 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A hydrant, e.g. for aircraft fuelling purposes, comprises a body 10, Fig. 3, buried in the ground with its open end 11 flush with the ground surface and its lower end 13 connected to a liquid delivery pipe 14, and having an internal shoulder 15 which divides the housing into a lower shut-off valve chamber 17 and an upper hydrant valve chamber 16. A sleeve 26 is mounted in chamber 16 and held by screws 29 to shoulder 15 to form a seat 31 for a shut-off closure member 45 urged thereto by a spring 51. A disc 33 is held by screws 32 on the upper end of the sleeve to form a seat 38 for a hydrant closure member 39 urged thereto by a spring 44. A coupling member 71, e.g. of the kind described in Specification 649,493 may be inserted in the end 11 to engage a recess 24 and connect a delivery hose 76 to the body. The member has radial tongues 73 which co-act with tongues extending inwardly from the recess wall to interlock the member 71 and body 10. Manipulation of a stem 75 first raises a coupling closure member 74 from its seat 74<SP>1</SP> and then unseats the hydrant and shut-off members to permit outflow of liquid to the hose. The end 11 is closed after removal of the coupling member by a cover 52, Fig. 2, which has tongues 54, corresponding to tongues 73, to interlock the cover and body. A handle 56 is formed to permit the rotary locking and unlocking movements of the cover. A key actuated lock 57 is provided, the bolt 64 being projected between adjacent recess tongues. The key barrel 63 is protected by a screwed plug 69. The closure members 39, 45 each comprise a head integral with a stem 40 and a ring 42 screwed to the head to support a sealing ring 43. Member 39 and its seat may be removed for repair leaving the hydrant closed by the member 45.
