Abstract

701,725. Disc brakes. LALLEMANT, P. J. M. Feb. 20, 1952 [March 21, 1951; Dec. 28, 1951], No. 4542/52. Class 103(1) In a disc brake comprising a single disc 1 which is adapted to be engaged on either side by circumferentially arranged blocks of friction lining material 6 and 7 mounted upon annular support members 4 and 5, metal pads 8 and 9 are arranged between alternate blocks 6 and 7 so that when the hydraulic actuator piston and cylinder 13, 14 is operated to apply the brake, the metal pads 8 and 9 bear against the disc 1 and transfer heat therefrom to the support members 4 and 5 which dissipate it to the surrounding air. As shown in Fig. 2 the pads 8, 9, are mounted resiliently on the members 4 and 5 by rods 10 and springs 12 so that they can move back as wear occurs in the pads 6 and 7. The support members 4 and 5 are preferably hollow and filled with a salt solution comprising a mixture of powdered napthalene, such as that described in French Specification 999,870, which melts at the temperature of operation of the brake and has a high specific and latent heat. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the heat conductor pads 8 are themselves in the form of hollow members containing a coolant and are resiliently mounted on an annular backing plate 4. In another form the pads 8 may be cooled by flow of a fluid led in by a flexible pipe. Such a pad 8b is shown in Fig. 6, the fluid, preferably air, entering by the pipe 20 and after passing oyer' the internal vanes escaping through vents 22. In Fig. 8, there is shown an arrangement whereby in an aircraft installation, a supply of air is branched off the compressed air feed circuit 23 by pipe 24 and after being led through a radiator 25 is passed to the brake under control of a valve 32 opened automatically by pressure applied to the hydraulic master cylinder 28 by which the brake friction elements are compressed. A valve member 34, interposed between the master cylinder 28 and the cylinder 31 containing the valve 32, has a partition containing a central port and non-return valves whereby when pressure is relieved in the hydraulic system, the air cooling supply to the brakes is not immediately cutoff.
