Abstract

Polymers containing at least 10 per cent. of vinyl or vinylidene chloride are stabilized by wetting a virgin form (see below) of the polymer with an acidified aqueous solution of a stabilizer consisting of an alkali metal pyrophosphate, orthophosphate or phosphite, the solution having a pH value in the range of 3.5 to 5, separating the polymer from enough of the solution to leave in the polymer between 0.05 and 2 per cent. by weight of the stabilizer, and drying the polymer while it still contains the said amount of stabilizer. A virgin polymer is in its unmodified state as obtained from the polymerization reaction; it may have been washed and dried but has not been compounded or fabricated. The stabilizer solution may be acidified with hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, acetic or para-toluene sulphonic acid, a preferred solution containing tetrasodium pyrophosphate and nitric acid. The polymer may be polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride, a vinyl chloridevinylidene chloride co-polymer or a co-polymer of vinyl or vinylidene chloride with vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile or an acrylate or methacrylate.
