Abstract
700,988. Lasting machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and LANE, H. Nov. 22, 1951 [Nov. 23, 1950], No. 28651/50. Class 17(1) A progressive lasting machine for cement attachment, particularly of platform covers, as described in Specification 613,393 has a modified shoe-bottom rest which is reciprocated to engage the upper material in advance of its engagement by the gripper to detach the upper from the side of the shoebottom member should it become prematurely cemented thereto. A shoe-bottom rest 10 is mounted on a carrier 14 to swing about a shaft 16 and is urged yieldingly by a spring loaded plunger 24 towards an edge guide roll 64. It is caused to oscillate by an eccentric 44 through levers 38, 36 and an arm 34. A screw 30 can adjust the initial position of the carrier 14 and hence the forward and rearward position of the bottom rest 10. In use, depression of a starting treadle causes a throw-out 'lever 48 on the shaft 16, which normally holds the bottom rest 10 inoperative, to act through members 58, 56 and link 54 to bring the bottom rest 10 to its operative position, in which it engages the the shoe bottom member and reciprocates forwardly and rearwardly thereon to slide in a path extending beyond its edge so that the upper material or platform cover is separated therefrom. The path of the bottom rest 10 is arcuate about the shaft 16 and this is stated to reduce its friction on the shoe bottom during the feed of the shoe.
