[Class 17(i)] The machine of the parent Specification is modified to deal with relatively thick and resistant platform cover material by imparting to the grippers which apply tension thereto movement in a path which in its early part has a component heightwise away from the shoe bottom and then inwards of its edge. Later in its inward movement it moves toward the shoe bottom, and the return movement is generally the same as in the earlier machine. For this purpose, the carrier 32, through which the rear jaw 10 of the gripper is operated, is given a heightwise movement by engagement of a cam 41 having two inclined faces 43, 45 making an angle of about 30 degrees with the horizontal plane, mounted on the machine frame by a cam member 47 secured to the carrier 32 and having complementary faces 49, 51 arranged to co-operate with the faces 43, 45 respectively. The cam 41 may be depressed against a spring 65 (not shown) by an abutment 67 on a lever 242 on forward end of which presser feed foot 16 is mounted, to permit the gripper to be moved into, and maintained in, its fully lowered position during the return movement of the gripper rear jaw.
