Abstract
Woven fabrics composed at least in substantial part of synthetic, non-cellulosic, organic hydrophobic fibres having a melting point above 400 DEG F., e.g., polyamide, polyacrylonitrile or polyethylene terephthalate fibres, are given a reduced capacity for entraining moisture, and in addition, a softer feel, a reduced tendency to slip or ravel or to accumulate static charges and an increased stability against shrinkage, by applying an aqueous solution, dispersion or emulsion, containing 1.5-45 per cent by weight of thermosetting resin forming solids, drying and then applying mechanical pressure and heat sufficient to convert the resin to the insoluble condition, the mechanical pressure employed ranging from 250 to 3000 lb. per lineal inch of bowl pressure when a calender is employed or from 100 to 3000 lb./sq. inch when a hot press is employed and the amount of resin embodied in the fabric after washing ranging from 0.5 to 15 per cent of the dry weight of the fabric. Specified thermosetting resins are urea-formaldehyde, glucose-ureide-formaldehyde, dicyandiamide-formaldehyde, biuret-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde and the methyl and ethyl substitution products thereof, phenol-formaldehyde, acetone-formaldehyde, polyvinyl alcohol-formaldehyde, carbohydrate-formaldehyde, protein-formaldehyde and mixtures thereof. The solution or despersion may also contain lubricating, stiffening, softening, fulling and wetting agents.
