Class 146(2) [Also in Group XVII] A machine for packaging food in sealed bags comprises means to evacuate the bags, means to twist the ends of the bags into a hermetically sealed neck and means to apply a sealing clip or band to said neck. A succession of sealing clips 60 threaded on a paper strip 50 is fed from a reel 48 around a wheel 51 , and along a guide 58; the periphery 61 of the wheel 51 cooperating with a groove in the guide 58, Fig. 7, to bend the paper strip 50 longitudinally to allow it to pass out from the row of clips through an elbow 56, the clips being held on the guide 58 by margins 63 thereon and a backing leaf spring 57, Fig. 8. A pawlcarrying arm 69 rocked by a solenoidactuated arm 66 oscillates a pawl 54 to pull the paper strip 50 forward, a second pawl 55 preventing return movement of the strip, and thus cause the end clip 60 on the guide 58 to be pushed into a crimping head 74 positioned adjacent the end of the guide., The crimping, head 74 includes, Fig. 4, pivoted notched crimping jaws 77, 78 urged apart by springs 80 and adapted to co-operate with a punch 83 spring- mounted on a plunger 82 to support the base of the clip 60. The head 74, which is carried by a pivoted arm 75, is rocked from a clip-receiving position to a position in which it surrounds the twisted neck of a bag supported by a table 114. This is effected by a spring 97, Fig. 11, pulling an extension of the arm 75 against a cam 87 on a shaft 91 rotated one revolution through a one-revolution clutch 93. In the bag-engaging position the plunger 82 is moved forward, so that cam faces 79, 81 thereon urge the jaws 77, 78 together, by a pivoted lever 101 rocked, through a lever 98 linked by a spring 99 to the lever 101, by a cam 88 on the shaft 91. A knife 102 carried by an arm 113 pivoted to the head 74 is similarly operated by a cam 89 engaging a lever 111 to slice off the excess bag-neck material. A pivoted block 107, Fig. 15, linked to the arm 75 is adapted to engage a stop 95 of the clutch 93 to stop rotation of the shaft 91 if the arm 75 is unable to reach the bag-engaging position.
