Abstract

700,387. Centrifugal separators. MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR KOLENBEWERKING STAMICARBON N. V. June 14, 1951 [June 14, 1950], No. 14084/51. Class 23 A multi-hydrocyclone for treating starch suspension comprises a cylindrical block 1 having longitudinally extending conical bores 4, cover plates 9 which are disposed in the wide ends of said bores and which may be provided with vortexfinders 10, means, such as opposed clamping plates, for securing the block and cover plates together and a common feed chamber 2 in said block communicating with supply passages 3 for feeding the material to be treated tangentially into the wide ends of said borer wherein said supply passages constitute channels in the block which are covered by the cover plates and wherein the damping plates are perforated opposite each bore for the passage of the discharge therefrom. The block and the cover plates are made of rubber and the block is provided with sealing lips 12, 13. The tangential inlets of the outer and inner bores 4 commumicate with the periphery of the block and the chamber 2 respectively. Two multi-hydroclones in series comprises a cup-shaped housing 14 which surrounds the block 1 to define an annular chamber 15a therewith and ha.s a tube 16 extending into the chamber 2. The block .1 is positioned between perforated plates 17, 19. The second multi-hydrocyclone is superimposed on the housing 14 and secured thereto, together with a cover 47, by a bolted flanged connection. The apex discharge of the two multi-hydrocylones is fed through valve controlled outlets 23, 41. The vortex-finder discharge from the first multi-hydrocyclcne is fed to the second multihydrocyclane and the vortex-finder discharge therefrom passes through a valve controlled port 48 in the cover 47. The assembly may comprise three multi-hydrocyclones in series. In a modification two multi-hydrocyclones are arranged in parallel on either side of a central inlet and the two end covers are secured together by bolts passing through flanges in the housings. The cover plates may stand proud of the block 1 to provide communication between the chambers 2, 15a in conjunction with or in place of the bores 3. Specification 607,787 is referred to.
