Abstract
699,945. Clothes drying apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 4, 1952 [Feb. 3, 1951], No. 2916/52. Class 34 (ii) A tumbler drier with a foraminated drum 40 within a heater chamber formed by horseshoe shaped panels 16, 17 and a wrapped sheet 19 has a heater 26, an exhaust duct communicating between the heater chamber and the outer atmosphere, and a plenum chamber into which atmospheric air is passed by a fan 72 to raise the pressure therein above atmospheric, the plenum chamber discharging the air into the heater chamber in two streams, one of which flows about thd rum and heater the other flowing towards the exhaust duct to dilute the heated exhaust air and reduce its temperature before it is discharged. The plenum chamber comprises the base 2 of the apparatus, the sheet 19 and a side wall plate 70 and roof plate 71. Fan 72 draws air through louvres 38 into the plenum chamber from which it discharges under pressure through narrow slots 74, 75 parallel to the tumbler axis. Discharge of the air from the heater chamber is via a lint trap of drawer-like structure having a base from which sides 77 extend upwardly and a sloping mouth structure 78 and screen 82. A port 88 in the walls 77 allows discharge of air if the screen becomes blocked by lint. In a modification (Fig. 10) a drawer-like structure 90 has a front panel 91 covering the opening in the toe-board and sealed by a gasket 92, side walls 95 and a sloping screen 96 occupying substantially the full width and length of the drawer. A thermostat 107 having a bulb 108 controls the air temperature in the heater chamber and a limit switch protects against overheating due to thermostat failure. An ozone producing lamp 121 is located within the plenum chamber and a timer switch provides a cooling period in which the heater is switched off while the motor driving the drum is still running. A centrifugal switch also cuts out the heater if the motor operates below normal running speed.
